Aesthetic appeal in traditional Japanese cuisine has always played a vital role, and the choice of tableware is just as important as the choice of ingredients. While a lot of other cuisines prefer a plain white canvas, Japanese chefs use plates, bowls, glasses, serving utensils and chopsticks to enhance and complement the presentation of food.
This small plate with stand (called "kodai"), is great to serve appetizers like tsukidashi, otoshi in Japanese cuisine. Mix and match a variety of these small plates and bowls to serve tapas portions.
This ceramic has checkered pattern with brilliant green copper glaze called Oribe.
For the brilliant green color, wares are fired using oxidation at 1220 degrees Celsius. If these conditions are not met, the glaze may be brown or red, so this technique can be executed by skilled artists.
